Offshore wind turbines at sea

Projects

Developing the projects that power the transition

Our first major project is a circa 1 GW offshore wind development being taken forward by NMK Renewables on behalf of SBM Offshore. We are also part of a consortium pursuing a floating offshore wind opportunity in Malta, and are exploring further opportunities including onshore wind, solar and BESS in a number of jurisdictions.

North Channel Wind

North Channel Wind is off the east coast of Northern Ireland. The projects (North Channel Wind 1 and 2) will be located between 9 and 25 km from shore, in approximately 120 m of water depth.

Malta

NMK Renewables is part of a consortium of international and local partners bidding to deliver the concession for the design, construction, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of an offshore floating wind farm for renewable energy supply. The project is estimated to be in the region of 300 MW. The Maltese Government is currently carrying out some additional survey work on the proposed sites to expedite the process for the winning bidders.

Why offshore wind

A vital role in our clean energy future

Offshore wind has a vital role to play in our clean energy future. In Northern Ireland we have one of the best wind resources in Europe. This vast, natural resource provides a fantastic opportunity to tackle the climate emergency and improve our energy security by using clean, local resources, rather than relying on fossil fuels from overseas. And in doing so, building a new industry, bringing jobs and investment to our economy.

Wind energy is one of Northern Ireland’s main tools in the fight against climate change. It cuts our carbon emissions by millions of tonnes every year and currently provides almost half of the country’s electricity. However, we need to do more.

All Northern Ireland’s existing wind farms are onshore. By locating offshore, the wind turbines can benefit from more consistent wind speeds and the turbines can be larger, with higher towers and longer blades that are not feasible to build onshore. This means a single offshore wind turbine can generate as much as three or four modern onshore turbines.

Security of supply

Generating our electricity locally from offshore wind will reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuel-based energy and significantly improve energy security.

Climate change

Projects that support the delivery of renewable energy targets and the move to a net zero carbon economy, helping to reduce reliance on imported energy and improve security of supply.

Biodiversity

NMK Renewables is focused on equitable net gain, enabling both strategic and site-based programmes to enhance biodiversity.

Community

NMK Renewables is committed to positive community engagement. We believe that communities and citizens have to be at the centre of the change in how energy is produced and used.

Renewable electricity generation

NMK Renewables is passionate about a cleaner energy future. We aim to develop schemes that produce electrical power using naturally replenishing energy sources.
